Summer Dog Walks: Practical Heat-Safety Tips
Hot weather can make dog walks risky. Heat from asphalt can burn paws and increase the risk of heat-related illness, so choose the time and location of walks carefully.
Walk in the early morning or after sunset when conditions are cooler. Prefer shaded parks, grass, or other cooler surfaces where possible. Bring fresh water, offer breaks, and watch your dog closely.
If your dog seems weak, pants heavily, shows distress, or develops any unusual signs, move to a cool place and contact a veterinarian promptly. Heat safety requires flexible decisions based on the weather and your individual dog.
A pet water fountain can help provide fresh water at home, but it does not prevent heat illness or replace supervision, shade, water breaks, or veterinary care.
